THIS IS THE LIVE ACTION OF MELLIE FITZ FIGHTING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS… and she WON after being there for hours, but not 24. I needed this, thank you Senator Booker .” Well, Mercedes referred to Mellie Grant from the Scandal series and her 16 hours on the Senate floor. She fought for hours to fight for women’s rights. And the recent 25-hour-long marathon speech by New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker has certainly proved its possibility. 

For those not familiar with Mellie Grant’s struggle – she went to great lengths to obstruct a legislative progress while technically not contravening it. This was done in the show because the Senate needed to vote on and pass a federal spending bill before the holidays. But when Mellie got to know that the funding for Planned Parenthood is put under the discretionary spending column, which meant it could be taken away at any time, she couldn’t stand it. Especially when the stakes are as high as 1.1 million dollars. And then the story went as wild as Mellie standing on the Senate floors for 16 hours.  

Mercedes didn’t just inherit her love for sports, she was born with a whistle around her neck. She earned the honour of ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year. Mercedes also announced, “She is Football Weekend” to celebrate “Tampa Bay’s female leaders of today and tomorrow.” The event was scheduled for International Women’s Day, which was on March 8. She made sure to make her mark on a big day. She has a zeal for empowering women, more so in athletics. The 25-hour marathon speech by the U.S. Senator has sparked fire in her to make it certain that continuous standing for long hours is indeed possible as demonstrated in the show for fighting for women’s rights.

Cory Booker, on the other hand, has held the Senate floors lasting all night and day and into Tuesday night. This showcases a historic mark for demonstrating Democrats’ resistance to President Donald Trump’s sweeping actions.
