1984’s Gremlins in many ways represented the height of producer Steven Spielberg’s powers as a dominant creative force in entertainment. Under the direction of the legendary Joe Dante, Gremlins walked a fine line between twisted violence, cuteness overload, and social satire. The puppetry work by Chris Walas still holds up against the advantages of CGI in cinema. However, these very elements that made Gremlins a seminal picture of the ‘80s were lost almost entirely in favor of a lighthearted romp with the less successful Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990.
