John Terry has been left impressed by what he has seen from Enzo Maresca, but is unsure that his Chelsea side have what it takes to win the Premier League this season.

The Blues have made a strong start to their second season under the Italian’s tutelage, sitting second in the table and one of only three teams still unbeaten.

It comes after a promising first season, where Chelsea faded away from title contention midway through the campaign before bouncing back to win the Conference League and Club World Cup.

Another busy summer of transfer saw 11 new players come through the door at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea continuing their policy of signing young, talented players with plenty of potential.

The likes of Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian already look at home in a Blue shirt, while fans will be hopeful that Alejandro Garnacho can provide more depth in wide attacking areas having signed towards the end of the window.

But despite that, former captain Terry believes that Chelsea’s young squad may still be too early in their journey to truly challenge the best teams in the league for all 38 games of the season.

‘I’m not sure Chelsea have enough experience within their squad to push Liverpool and also I don’t want to put pressure on the Chelsea squad as well, so I think it’s Liverpool’s to lose,’ he told talkSPORT.

‘We are a young squad and this year, with the experience of maybe pushing the other teams close, I think we have a chance to be up there and we should because we’re Chelsea.

‘I think any top side or any player going into the season saying we can’t win it shouldn’t be playing at the top level.

‘So I think every Chelsea player should believe that we can go and win it. But do I think we will? No I don’t, being honest with you but I think we’ll be right amongst it.’

Terry is still more than happy with the direction of travel under Maresca, though, saying of the Italian: ‘I’ve been very impressed with him.

‘I work in the academy so he invites me over a couple of times a week when the young players go and play with the first team and I get to see him work as well.

‘He’s very personable with the players, and I think the biggest thing for any manager in the last couple of years has been to be really close to the players, and he seems to have a really good connection with the younger players.

‘He’s young himself so he understands the players and what they wants and he is certainly getting the best out of them at the moment.’

Chelsea returned from the international break to more injury woes, but will look to put that to the back of their minds as they prepare to take on Brentford in a west London derby on Saturday evening.
