US President Donald Trump has stated his readiness to deploy “overwhelming lethal force” until Iranian-backed Houthi rebels terminate their assaults on maritime shipping in a crucial corridor.
US President Donald Trump has initiated a series of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, asserting that he will employ “overwhelming lethal force” until Iranian-backed Houthi rebels halt their attacks on vessels in this significant maritime corridor. The Houthis reported that nine civilians were killed in these strikes.
In a social media update, Trump declared, “Our courageous Warfighters are currently executing aerial strikes on the terrorists’ camps, leadership, and missile installations to safeguard American shipping, air, and naval resources, and to restore Navigational Freedom,” further stating, “No terrorist group will obstruct American commercial and naval ships from traversing freely across the World’s Waters.”
He also issued a warning to Iran for backing the rebel group, pledging to hold the nation “fully accountable” for the actions of its proxy. This warning follows Trump’s recent letter to Iranian officials proposing a revival of bilateral discussions regarding Iran’s advancing nuclear program—a program he has vowed to prevent from becoming operational.
The airstrikes come after a recent statement from the Houthis indicating their intention to renew attacks on Israeli vessels in retaliation for Israel’s blockade of Gaza. However, no such Houthi attacks have been reported since that announcement.
On Saturday evening, the Houthis reported a series of explosions within their territory. Residents stated that at least four airstrikes targeted the Eastern Geraf neighborhood, where frightened families were caught in the eruptions.
Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, asserted that the airstrikes would not deter their group, pledging retaliation against the U.S. “Sanaa will remain Gaza’s shield and support and will not abandon it regardless of the obstacles,” he remarked on social media.
While the US, Israel, and Britain have previously conducted strikes on Houthi-controlled regions, Israel’s military opted not to comment on the operations carried out on Saturday.
A US official confirmed that the strikes were executed solely by American forces, marking the first such operation during Trump’s second term, following a period of relative peace in the region.
