Sony Interactive Entertainment recently revealed several new looks at some of its future titles in a 35+ minute PlayStation State of Play. However, there was one notable first-party game missing from the presentation that some PS5 players were hoping to already be playing by now. After its abrupt delay, Marathon has gone dark, and it doesn’t seem Bungie plans to reveal more details about the game in the near future.
Where is Marathon?
In a report from Forbes, their sources claim that Bungie won’t be discussing Marathon in any form for the time being. The earliest PS5 players can expect an update on the first-person shooter is in November. However, the source makes it clear that this is a “maybe” and not a guarantee.
In Bungie’s Marathon Development Update in June, the studio claimed we would hear from them again “this Fall.” This November does fall within that timeline. Still, roughly six months of not hearing about a game many players had already played is quite a while.
“You’ll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we’ve made, alongside the game’s new release date,” reads Bungie’s statement. “Thank you again for your patience and— much more importantly— your passion. Your continued feedback will help us make Marathon the incredible gaming experience we all know it can be.”
As of now, Sony has Marathon slated for release within this fiscal year, which means any time between now and March 31, 2026. However, according to Sony CFO Lin Tao, that window is “not a commitment,” which means its release date could potentially slide into the next fiscal year.
Marathon was supposed to release for PS5 just a couple of days ago, on September 23. However, due to negative player feedback, Bungie delayed the game. In the update from June, their focus has shifted to several facets of the game, including more challenging AI encounters, more rewarding runs, higher visual fidelity, proximity chat, and improving the solo/duos experience.
