The men’s college basketball scene has been abuzz ever since the Kentucky Wildcats announced their funds for the upcoming roster. While the million-dollar news created a frenzy among fans and analysts alike, the program was adamant on recruiting some of the finest talents in the country. Even if they came with a price tag. Now, UNC is the latest program to follow Kentucky’s footsteps as head coach Hubert Davis & Co. is ready to splurge a whopping $14 million on the upcoming roster.
And while the amount is a huge blow to any program that does not possess enough financials to lure the players with that kind of money, ESPN analyst and host of The Drive, Tim Donnelly, has a different view altogether. He feels that if a program has the financial capacity to spend on a recruiting class, they should also be capable of building a strong and efficient roster. And often times, a strong roster does not come with a high price tag.
Davis’ challenge, though, is turning that big budget into a tight-knit team, especially after losing key players like RJ Davis and Jae’Lyn Withers to eligibility, Drake Powell to the NBA Draft, and Elliot Cadeau and Jalen Washington via transfer. Sources close to the program, including Tar Heels Wire, note that integrating nine new players, five transfers like Henri Veesaar and four freshmen like Caleb Wilson, could strain team chemistry if cohesion takes a back seat to individual star power.
On being asked whether he liked North Carolina or Louisville Cardinals in terms of teams that received some of the most promising players from the portals early this season, ESPN college hoops analyst Tim Donnelly was clear as day. Without skipping a heartbeat, Donnelly shared his views on the latest episode of 99.9 The Fan podcast as he sided with the Cardinals. And though he was not sure which team will secure a higher rank in the ACC this year, Donnelly was confident in Louisville’s players.
“Louisville might be the best example,” Donnelly remarked. “I don’t know if Louisville or UNC is going to be better in the ACC this year, I know Louisville will start ranked higher in the ACC.” While head coach Pat Kelsey’s program has a lower NIL budget that ranges from $8 to $10 million when compared to a whopping estimated $14 million budget of the Tar Heels, the Cardinals boast of better players who can lead a successful season for the team.
Donnelly emphasised on how a team needs to spend the right amount of money on acquiring good quality athletes. This is exactly what Louisville HC Pat Kelsey did last season when he was forced to rebuild the roster using transfer portals instead of asking for more funds. “Louisville did feels like you spent the money and got something in return,” the analyst said. “They spent a bunch of money, don’t get me wrong. New coach last year rebuilt everything.”
While the team saw a dip in the rankings last season, they took bigger risks and did get to reap the benefits of a power-packed roster.”They obviously went big game hunting and brought in, especially that they’ve dropped a bit in the rankings, but I mean, at the time when those commitments came into Louisville, it was like second best guard, best point guard, best shooter in the portal. They just reeled them in. It felt tangible,” Donnelly shared how the program acquired some of the finest players in the NCAA.
On the other hand, the ESPN analyst provided some shocking insights into Hubert Davis’ locker room system where he said instead of focusing on getting better players, they just inducted players on the basis of the NIL value each athlete brought to the roster. Donnelly expanded on the thought as he said, “UNC is like, “Oh that’s good value! Oh, that’s nice, okay!” I like Jarin Stevenson. I think he has the potential to be a star coming back home to North Carolina, where he played a lot of his youth ball. But he hasn’t quite lived up to it yet they probably got a deal on him.”
Praising Stevenson as a promising talent for the Tar Heels, Donnelly feels like if the program has been granted a triple valuation than past year’s, they should use the amount to on promising talent and better players instead of focusing on average athletes. Despite being granted a huge sum of money, it will be exciting to see how HC Davis utilises the amount as an edge over other college programs.
UNC Tar Heels ready to spend more than triple on the roster
ESPN analyst Tim Donnelly read an article on his latest podcast that confirmed the news of the University of North Carolina releasing $14 million dollars for its upcoming roster placement. He read, “Multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to to the 2025-26 roster approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago.” The amount is more than triple than what was spent on the Tar Heels roster last season.
If this was not enough, the General Manager’s annual salary confirmed that the program has enough funds to financially build a strong and promising roster. “Men’s basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner’s $850,000 salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university’s support of its prize program,” the article read.
