Unai Emery is under enormous pressure following Aston Villa’s shocking start to the season and has just lost a key ally at the club.
Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, surprisingly stepped down on Monday night and is due to be replaced by Roberto Olabe.
The 57-year-old was especially close with Emery, with the pair working together at Sevilla to win three consecutive Europa League titles from 2014 to 2016.
He reunited with the manager at Villa Park in 2023, with the Villans qualifying for the Champions League in his first year before impressively reaching the quarter-finals of the competition and finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.
However, the last summer transfer window was hugely underwhelming, with just £26m spent, all of which on centre-forward Evann Guessand, as the club was restricted by various financial rules.

Moreover, much of their business wasn’t done until the end of the window, with the free transfer of former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof and the loan deals for United’s Jadon Sancho and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott only completed on deadline day.
As a result, it has been reported that not all is well behind the scenes, especially after Villa’s terrible start to the 2025/26 season.

They have failed to win any of their opening five Premier League games – three draws, two defeats – scoring just one goal in the process, and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brentford.
Emery slated his players and called them ‘lazy’ following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against 10-man Sunderland, a result that leaves his team 18th in the table.
This poor form and the departure of close friend Monchi has started to fuel speculation about the former Arsenal manager’s future at Villa Park.

The 53-year-old, who replaced Steven Gerrard in October 2022, is among the favourites to become the next Premier League boss to leave his job, alongside West Ham’s Graham Potter and Ruben Amorim at United.
However, the Telegraph report that Emery has no intention of quitting at this time and is ‘fully committed’ to the club and to turning around their poor start.
It is also said he will address the situation in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday ahead of their first Europa League clash against Bologna on Thursday.
