The ride-hailing giant reported mixed first-quarter results for 2025, with profit exceeding Wall Street targets but revenue falling just short. Investors reacted to the revenue miss despite upbeat trends in rides, delivery, and autonomous vehicle initiatives.

Q1 Delivers EPS Beat but Revenue Shortfall

Uber posted first-quarter earnings of 83 cents per share, surpassing analysts’ forecast of 50 cents. Revenue came in at $11.53 billion, narrowly missing the expected $11.62 billion. Still, this marked a 14% rise from $10.13 billion in the same quarter last year.

Net income reached $1.78 billion, a sharp turnaround from a $654 million loss in Q1 2024. Uber’s year-to-date return now stands at 42.29%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s 4.67% decline over the same period.

Mobility, Delivery, and Trips Continue Growing

Uber’s Mobility segment gross bookings rose 13% year over year to $21.18 billion, while Delivery bookings advanced 15% to $20.38 billion. The platform’s active user base expanded 14%, with monthly active consumers reaching 170 million.

Users completed about 3.04 billion trips during the quarter, up 18% from the prior year. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted these gains while pointing to autonomous vehicle technology as Uber’s next major growth lever.

Autonomous Vehicles Drive Future Ambitions

Uber said its autonomous vehicle (AV) operations have hit an annual run-rate of 1.5 million trips. Khosrowshahi described AV tech as “the single greatest opportunity ahead” for the company.

In March, Uber launched an exclusive robotaxi option in Austin, Texas through a partnership with Waymo, a move that exceeded internal expectations. Roughly 100 Waymo vehicles now operate in Austin, reportedly outperforming 99% of local drivers in trip volume.

Uber also announced partnerships with Volkswagen, Avride, May Mobility, and Aurora to expand autonomous ride-hailing and freight services in the U.S. International collaborations include AV firms WeRide, Pony.AI, and Momenta.

Q2 Guidance and Outlook

For the current quarter, Uber projects gross bookings between $45.75 billion and $47.25 billion, with expected EBITDA ranging from $2.02 billion to $2.12 billion.

While the company’s robust EPS and user metrics cheered some investors, the revenue shortfall and market reaction highlight lingering questions about its near-term growth trajectory.
