Despite calls to shift focus elsewhere, Trump remains significantly involved in professional golf, particularly in negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
Donald Trump is celebrating yet another club championship at his course near West Palm Beach.
However, could this be the final time the 78-year-old takes pride in winning one of his tournaments?
The former president shared the news via social media, noting that it would “probably be my last.”
“I just won the Golf Club Championship, probably my last, at Trump International Golf Club, in Palm Beach County, Florida,” he wrote on Sunday afternoon. “What a great honor! The Awards dinner is tonight at the Club. I want to thank the amazing Golf Staff and all the fantastic golfers who participated in the event. Such fun!”
Trump’s golf skills have certainly not declined since his return to the White House for a second term. This marks the sixth weekend he has flown to his Palm Beach home for a golf outing in the two months since the Jan. 20 inauguration.
Trump has shown a deep commitment not just to playing golf but also to getting involved in the discussions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, leading PGA Tour player Adam Scott to comment last week that Trump “had far more important things to focus on” rather than the situation in professional golf.
Scott noted that he “encouraged (Trump) to focus on that for everyone’s well-being after our meeting.”
Trump’s Tradition of Winning His Own Tournaments
It has become a tradition for Trump to declare victory in his own tournaments.
Two years ago, he claimed he won a club championship despite not participating in the first round. Reports indicate that Trump informed tournament organizers he had a solid round two days before the tournament started, which he then designated as his Saturday score for the club championship.
Later that year, Trump boasted of winning the Senior Club Championship at his Bedminster, N.J. club with a score of 67. During that same month, a LIV Golf event occurred at the same course, where only six LIV golfers out of 144 rounds managed to shoot 67 or lower.
While recounting that triumph, Trump stated online: “For some reason, I am just a good golfer/athlete – I have won many Club Championships, and it is always a great honor!”
He has also remarked: “You need strength and stamina to WIN, & I have strength & stamina – most others don’t. You also need strength & stamina to GOVERN!”
A year ago, he announced on social media that he had added two more championships to his extensive list, claiming victories in both the Club Championship and Senior Club Championship at his course near West Palm Beach.
That evening, he received the 2024 Trump International Golf Club Most Improved Player award at a banquet, presented by none other than Jack Nicklaus.
In January, a photo of scores from 11 participants in the Senior Club Championship at his West Palm Beach course surfaced on Instagram, displaying Trump four shots ahead of the rest. These scores were displayed at the course.
Nevertheless, no one appears to have witnessed Trump play, and it was reported that attendees were unaware he had participated until they noticed his name atop the leaderboard.
According to sources, when his name appeared at the top, it led to surprise among those present and followers of the event.
Trump did not verify or deny the claim.
He owns 16 golf courses worldwide, including two in Palm Beach County, one of which is in Jupiter.
Trump National Doral is set to host a LIV Golf event next month.
