Washington — On Thursday, President Trump petitioned the Supreme Court to temporarily limit the impact of three lower court rulings that broadly impeded the enforcement of his executive order aimed at terminating birthright citizenship.

The Trump administration has sought emergency relief from the high court through three distinct requests stemming from cases initiated in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington state. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris is currently appealing to the Supreme Court to restrict the reach of these orders to only those individuals directly engaged in the cases.

“These cases — which involve challenges to the President’s January 20, 2025 Executive Order regarding birthright citizenship — pose significant constitutional questions with substantial implications for border security,” she stated in the requests. “However, at this juncture, the government presents a ‘modest’ appeal: while the parties contest important merits issues, the Court should ‘limit the scope’ of various preliminary injunctions that ‘purpor[t] to affect every person in the country,’ confining those injunctions to parties actually under the courts’ jurisdiction.”
