Washington — On Thursday, President Trump issued a warning about imposing new tariffs on wines, champagnes, and other alcoholic beverages imported from France and other European nations in response to the European Union’s increased tariffs on American whiskey.
In a statement on Truth Social, a platform owned by the president, Trump declared that the U.S. would retaliate against the EU after it revealed plans to hike tariffs on U.S.-produced whiskey to 50%.
“Should this tariff not be rescinded immediately, the U.S. will soon impose a 200% tariff on all wines, champagnes, and alcoholic beverages coming from France and other E.U. member states,” he claimed. “This would benefit the wine and champagne industries in the U.S.”
Trump labeled the EU as “one of the most hostile and abusive tax and tariff authorities worldwide.”
Since resuming office, Trump has threatened tariffs and enforced them against numerous significant trading partners. On Wednesday, he elevated tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 25%, leading to a reaction from the EU.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded on Wednesday, indicating the EU’s countermeasures would amount to 26 billion euros ($28 billion).
“We deeply regret this measure,” she stated. “Tariffs are essentially taxes. They adversely affect businesses and consumers alike. They disrupt supply chains and introduce economic uncertainty. Jobs are on the line, and prices will increase.”
