What to watch for in Trump-Putin talks over Ukraine ceasefire deal

Washington—President Trump is holding a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday morning as the U.S. seeks to facilitate peace discussions between Russia and Ukraine, three years following Russia’s invasion.

According to White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, a message posted on X at 10:54 a.m. Tuesday indicated that the call, which commenced at 10 a.m., is still in progress.

“The conversation is proceeding well and remains ongoing,” Scavino stated.

Anticipating the call on Monday, Mr. Trump remarked that U.S. officials are engaging in “very serious discussions” with Russia concerning “land that would be preserved and lost.” “You’re essentially sculpting the boundaries of a nation,” he explained.

He further noted that the negotiations are complex and expressed a desire to meet with Putin at a future time.

Last week, U.S. and Ukrainian representatives convened in Saudi Arabia to propose a 30-day ceasefire. Putin indicated he accepted the notion of a ceasefire in principle, yet he did not finalize the agreement and stated that additional talks were necessary.

This is a developing story. Please return for updates.
