Dyfed-Powys Police discovered the woman in a river, in Pontargothi – a remote area in Carmarthenshire, 7 miles east of Carmarthen.

Unable to retrieve her body themselves, they called the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service to the location.

Two boats and two fire engines were used in the recovery mission, forcing authorities to close the road near the River Cothi.

Sadly, though, the woman had died in the river.

The authorities have contacted her next of kin.

Speaking about the incident, a spokeswoman for the police force said: “We are investigating the circumstances around the death of a woman in the Pontargothi area.

“Emergency services attended the area at around 5.30pm on May 6.

“Her next of kin are aware.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

“A report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 5.41pm on Tuesday, crews from Carmarthen and Llandeilo Fire Stations were called to an incident in Pontargothi.

“Crews responded following reports of a person in the River Cothi and the Swift Water Rescue Team was mobilised.”
