Producer Lindsey Collins has shared the unexpected backstory behind Bad Bunny’s cameo in Toy Story 5. The Puerto Rican superstar’s journey to Pixar did not begin in a recording booth.

The story behind Bad Bunny’s role in Toy Story 5

The path to a Pixar movie rarely starts in a living room, but that’s exactly where the casting team discovered Bad Bunny’s genuine love for the franchise. The Grammy winner had created a series of comedic mini-movies at home in 2020, playing with his own Toy Story dolls and voicing the characters himself.

While speaking with DiscussingFilm, Toy Story 5 producer recounted the moment of discovery, “He filmed these little videos of himself during COVID, playing with Toy Story dolls. We just happened to see those things… so all of us were like, he loves Toy Story.” That authentic, unpolished fandom stayed with the production team.

As the film’s production progressed and the search began for a voice to bring a particular forgotten toy to life, the team saw an opportunity. “When it was coming time to be like, who are we gonna cast for these smaller fun cameo parts, all of a sudden it was like it wouldn’t hurt to ask,” Collins said.

The response was immediate and enthusiastic. “He immediately said yes, and then when we recorded with him, his part went from one line to a whole bunch of lines,” the producer revealed. Bad Bunny’s creative energy in the studio expanded the role organically. Collins added, “How about in Spanish, how about in English, and he was like, okay. He was a dream, and we all just loved him.”

The artist voices Pizza with Sunglasses, a character Disney describes as “effortlessly cool and mysterious.” He is a member of a small but mighty community of forgotten toys living in an abandoned backyard shed.

Fans can catch him on the big screen in Toy Story 5 on June 19 in the United States.
