At a BFI event in London, Tom Cruise said he repeatedly declined Top Gun sequel offers after the original’s success. “They really wanted me to make Top Gun over and over,” Cruise said, adding, “But I wanted to develop my talent in different areas, and I wanted more challenges.” He said he wanted to explore diverse roles and creative challenges. Cruise met Top Gun director Tony Scott while working with Ridley Scott on Legend (1985). After agreeing to star in Top Gun, he negotiated a deal that let him closely follow the film’s development. He observed how producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson managed the production process.
When the movie became a major hit, the studio approached Cruise for a sequel. He declined the offers, saying he wanted to broaden his range and pursue new creative challenges beyond the Top Gun franchise.
The BFI talk further highlighted Cruise’s hands-on filmmaking and his start as a producer with Mission: Impossible in 1996. “It was about how I can evolve action and storytelling and imbue that kind of storytelling with greater amounts of emotion,” Cruise said. He said he built his own film education by studying directors like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg and by traveling abroad to learn how different countries make movies.
Cruise credited himself with introducing the idea of international red carpet premieres, stating, “I came up with the red carpet premieres, so we could bring the Hollywood culture to these places every day and then travel around.”
He also confirmed interest in future projects, stating, “My goals are endless.”
