Tom Hardy is recalling the time he didn’t get an audition for the 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie.

Hardy is starring in the new action thriller movie Havoc, which is directed by The Raid’s Gareth Evans. It will be released on Netflix on April 25, 2025.

The 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie, meanwhile, has returned to theaters for its 20th anniversary. Directed by Joe Wright, the film, which is based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, stars Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy.

What did Tom Hardy say about not getting a Pride & Prejudice audition?

During an interview with the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, via an Instagram post from @tomhardyvariations, the Venom actor was asked if it was true that he auditioned to play Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice.

“No, I didn’t actually get an audition,” Hardy answered. “I was told categorically by a lovely producer that ‘all women have an image or a vision of what Mr. Darcy looks like, and, I’m afraid, Tom, you just aren’t it.’ That’s showbiz.”

Hardy’s professional acting career was just taking off around the time that Pride & Prejudice was released, though he did appear in projects such as Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis, and Layer Cake prior to that. He then went on to star in movies such as 2008’s Bronson, 2010’s Inception, 2011’s Warrior, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, 2023’s The Bikeriders, and more.

A new version of Pride and Prejudice is now in the works at Netflix; however, Hardy won’t play Mr. Darcy in that project, either. It was recently announced that Slow Horses’ Jack Lowden has been tapped to portray the character in the forthcoming show, which will also star Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennett and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennett.
