Tom Cruise’s Biggest Movie of All Time Suddenly Dominates Streaming as No. 2

Tom Cruise’s biggest box-office hit is making another run on streaming. The movie has secured a rare spot on Netflix’s movie chart, beating several high-budget, widely discussed titles.

FlixPatrol‘s latest Netflix rankings listed Top Gun: Maverick as the second most-streamed movie on the platform right now. This puts it ahead of titles like Best of the Best, The Seemingly Perfect Family, Why Did I Get Married Again?, The Matchmaker’s Playbook, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and more.

The sequel arrived in theaters on May 27, 2022, with Paramount Pictures distributing the film. Joseph Kosinski directed the movie, while Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay. Cruise led a cast that included Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller, with Cruise also producing alongside Christopher McQuarrie, Jerry Bruckheimer, and David Ellison.

In the movie, Maverick is no longer the hotshot pilot audiences remember. After spending more than 30 years in the Navy, Pete Mitchell returns to Top Gun as an instructor, where he must prepare a younger group of elite aviators for one of their most dangerous assignments.

Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s fallen friend Goose. Training Rooster forces Maverick to reckon with old wounds while pushing the new pilots toward a mission where even a single mistake could prove disastrous.

The sequel cost around $177 million, yet it soared past $1.5 billion globally, with nearly $722 million coming from North America alone. Audiences have also kept the film’s reputation strong, with an 8.2/10 IMDb score from more than 900,000 ratings. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 96% critics’ score alongside an impressive 99% audience score.

Awards followed the blockbuster run. Top Gun: Maverick earned six Oscar nominations and won Best Sound at the 2023 Academy Awards. The movie also won Saturn Awards for Best Action/Adventure Film and Best Actor for Cruise.
