Timothée Chalamet‘s latest comments about the Oscars have already gone viral. Although said in jest, the comments could hurt his future Oscar odds.
Following the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals win over the San Antonio Spurs, Chalamet was on cloud nine. The Knicks fan has been a supporter for some time, and was at nearly every game of their playoff run, including traveling to every Finals game. After the Knicks won, Chalamet joined in on the celebration, and his comments quickly made the rounds.
As the Knicks celebrated the win on stage following the game, Chalamet was filmed watching himself. He joked that he would “way rather this than the Oscars,” joking that he’d rather be celebrating a Knicks title than win an Oscar. The comment is a joking reference to Chalamet’s inability to have claimed the ultimate acting award as of yet, even after being favored in several years. While Chalamet’s comments were said in jest, they could have very real consequences.
Timothée Chalamet’s comments will undoubtedly rub people the wrong way
Following his comments, people on social media were quick to split. Like many things Chalamet does, some believed they were a funny moment for the star. Others, though, believed that they were another arrogant remark from Chalamet, an unnecessary shade at the Academy after his loss. Earlier this year, Chalamet was viewed as a large favorite to win his first Oscar for his role in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme. Instead, Chalamet lost the award to Michael B. Jordan (Sinners).
While his comments will likely not affect his odds of winning an award in a hyper meaningful way, they could rub some wrong. Many reports following the Oscars have claimed that voters who gave the award to Jordan did so due to Chalamet’s “arrogant” attitude. Chalamet is no stranger to being outspoken, and has talked in the past about his desire to win an Oscar and become one of the greatest actors ever openly.
While traditional in the world of sports, this kind of talk is not something most big stars do in Hollywood, which led to many criticizing Chalamet. In 2025, Chalamet seemed to be going all-out for an Oscar, participating in a number of wild marketing stunts to promote both Marty Supreme and himself. However, it seems like the biggest thing he’ll have to work against in the future is his own belief and outspoken nature, and his latest comments, while fun and playful, could continue to harm him.
