What do you do when you enter the course of golf’s biggest tournament with an entire country’s expectations on you? You don’t falter. Well, the same cannot be said about Scottie Scheffler. Losing important formative rounds is surely disappointing for a player of his stature. And when you break unwanted records on the way, that’s worse.
After Saturday’s Foursomes loss, Scottie Scheffler is now the first world no. 1 to ever lose their first three matches. This comes in contrast to Tiger Woods‘ Ryder Cup record. Despite winning 15 majors, Woods’ stats have been quite underwhelming. With 12 wins, 21 losses, and 3 ties, he was a part of just one winning team in eight of the Cups he participated in. And after Scheffler and Russell Henley lost to the pair of Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland by one down, he might match this. Or might even surpass, who knows?
No reigning world no. 1 (OWGR began in 1986) has ever lost his first 3 matches in a Ryder Cup.
