Tom Holland’s 2021 movie Spider-Man: No Way Home apparently played a role in altering Sentry’s storyline in Thunderbolts*. Sentry, also known as Robert “Bob” Reynolds, was created by Jae Lee and Paul Jenkins and is one of the most powerful beings to exist in Marvel Comics. The character made its live-action debut in the MCU in Thunderbolts* and was played by Lewis Pullman.

Jake Schreier on why Thunderbolts* couldn’t use Sentry’s memory wipe story

Director Jake Schreier recently shared that Sentry’s story change in Thunderbolts* was due to Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Schreier told Marvel.com that they didn’t show Sentry’s memory erasing story from the comics, because it had already been done. He said, “Obviously, we couldn’t tell that same story because of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thanks, Jon [Watts].”

Sentry, aka Bob, was introduced in The Sentry #1 comic book, which came out in 2000. In Jenkins and Lee’s narrative, Bob wipes himself from everyone’s memories to defeat his dark persona, The Void. However, in Thunderbolts*, the end to the Void’s destruction is brought in a different way than in the comics. This is because Tom Holland’s Peter Parker had already done a similar thing in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

At the end of No Way Home, Parker got himself erased from the world’s memories with the help of Doctor Strange. This was done as a measure to stop beings from the alternate universes from entering the main universe.

Thus, to avoid having a similar storyline in two Marvel movies, Schreier decided to alter Sentry’s introduction in Thunderbolts*.

Additionally, Schreier lauded the original Sentry comics and asserted, “It’s interesting reading that run. When we talked to Paul Jenkins, he would talk about it as a parable for mental health and this idea of an equal amount of good and evil. But when I read Sentry in those comics, there is this level of hubris that he has, and it feels like people around him are getting a little concerned about it. I thought it was so resonant.”

Notably, Thunderbolts* made its way to the U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
