“Threw More Punches Against Mike Tyson”: Jake Paul Isn’t Letting Canelo Alvarez Get Away Easily

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul might be fighting former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next month, but he appears to be stuck on the Canelo Alvarez conversation. Following his first press conference for the fight at Avalon Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles, California, ‘The Problem Child’ dissed the Mexican superstar for his performance against William Scull.

Earlier this year, ‘El Gallo’, after coming off his record-breaking fight against legendary heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, was on the prowl for his next opponent. Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez had defeated Edgar Berlanga, and speculation about his next move was all the talk among fans. Suddenly, reports emerged that left everyone stunned.

Jake Paul was in conversation with ‘Cinnamon’ for a fight. However, later reports claimed that the Mexican superstar had instead signed a four-fight deal with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh. This put the 34-year-old on a collision course with William Scull and Terence Crawford. With the first fight in the rearview mirror already for Canelo, Jake Paul is seemingly still bitter as he downplays Canelo’s abilities.

While appearing in an interview with Fight Hub TV from California, Paul criticized Canelo’s performance against Scull, stating, “Come on, I threw more punches against Mike Tyson in eight two-minute rounds than he did in a 12-round fight.” Reportedly, Paul threw 278 punches against Mike Tyson while Canelo could manage only 152 punches earlier this month.

Interestingly, Canelo and Scull broke the record for the combined fewest punches thrown in a 12-round boxing match in Compubox’s history. When asked whether he would have fared better against Canelo, Paul confidently declared, “A thousand percent without a doubt. I would have beaten Canelo, and this is what I’ve been saying: he’s over the hill.”

However, Paul’s criticism wasn’t limited to Canelo’s last fight!

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are reportedly set to clash at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 13, a slight shift from the previously reported date of the 12th. The pair will fight for Canelo’s undisputed status in the middleweight division. Regardless, many speculate the fight could mirror the Canelo vs. Scull fight and turn out to be a boring affair.

Jake Paul seems to share the same belief. During the same interview, ‘El Gallo’ acknowledged that both Canelo and Crawford are great boxers, but “I just think that this has more hype around it” than it deserves. “We just saw them come off of some boring a** fights and they’re probably just going to sit there and dance for 12 rounds.”

Having said that, Jake Paul is clearly not over the betrayal from Canelo Alvarez, as Paul criticizes his every move. However, it’s undeniable how boring the Canelo-Scull fight was. Do you think the Crawford fight would be the same?
