Opening scenes are perhaps even more important than a film’s ending because they must draw in the viewer, introduce the themes of the film and the core battle at hand, while also hinting at what is to come. Many projects have nailed this, even if the rest of the narrative was a let-down, such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, there are none as tense, layered, and complex as the first sequence of Inglourious Basterds, when Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) interrogates Monsieur LaPadite (Denis Ménochet) as to the whereabouts of the Jewish Dreyfus family.
