Even though Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was light years ahead of its time, it took egregiously long for Star Trek's outcast show to receive proper recognition. The tone, setting, and structural differences received contentious reactions compared to Gene Roddenberry's vision of an enlightened future where inclusivity, curiosity, honor, pacifism, and diplomacy resolve society's infrequent problems. One can hardly argue against the premise's wish-fulfillment appeal, but Roddenberry positions The Original Series' crew as an idealized standard for our violent reality to emulate. As '90s television evolved from episodic to serialized storytelling, semi-static characterization wasn't narratively sustainable.
