The Conjuring universe is undoubtedly one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. With the horror landscape evolving through the unique and refreshing minds of Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger, The Conjuring universe was a classic ghost-story series that featured several chilling sequences with demonic entities, including evil nuns like Valak (Bonnie Aarons) and possessed dolls such as Annabelle. However, while these figures are obviously sinister presences, sometimes, less is more, and to find the most effective and disturbing sequence in the entire franchise, one must go back to the film that started it all, the original The Conjuring. James Wan brought skillful direction to this film throughout, but it is the scene where Carolyn (Lili Taylor) searches the house for what she thinks is an intruder, only to be trapped in the basement with the climactic ghost clap, that has never been improved upon when it comes to leaving us horrified. The ghost clap jump scare is iconic for good reason, as it uses simplicity to its most effective degree.
