David Simon’s spiritual successor to The Wire, another HBO crime drama called We Own This City, feels like an extension of the show, as it deals with police corruption in Baltimore in a frank and realistic way. Although Simon had ideas for The Wire season 6, involving Baltimore’s growing immigrant population and the inherently classist healthcare system, the acclaimed series ended with its fifth season. Despite universal praise from critics and a fervent cult fan following, The Wire always struggled in the ratings, so it was always on the verge of cancelation.
