The Kapoor Khandaan has been entertaining the masses for years. From Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor to Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor - the family has served many superstars who managed to win the hearts with their acting chops. One more superstar could have been a part of the list. However, a strict rule of the Kapoor family proved to be an hindrance. Recently, veteran actress Mumtaz revealed that she could have been the 'Kapoor bahu' but...
In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz revealed about her story with Shammi Kapoor. The actress shared that they wanted to marry each other. Even though there was an age gap of about 17 to 18 years, they were willing to tie the knot. She mentioned that Shammi Kapoor was a very good-looking man and she liked him a lot. However, Raj Kapoor had a strict rule that the women of the house won't work. That was the deal breaker for Mumtaz. "There was a rule till he was alive, that ghar ki bahu kaam nahi karegi. It was as straightforward as that," she said.
Mumtaz further explained how she lost out on Mera Naam Joker. She shared that a look-test was carried out and pictures were great. However, the character needed to wear short clothes. Raj Kapoor wondered what would happen if she got married to Shammi Kapoor and entered the family. He thought that it would be 'disastrous' if Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz got married in between the film and that is why she did not get the role. Mumtaz said, "I told him that we weren't getting married, and that he could confirm this with Shammi ji. But he was worried. What if we changed our mind halfway through his film?" The Do Raaste actress further shared that the rule was enforced by Prithviraj Kapoor. She shared that Raj Kapoor was right in making the decision of not casting her in Mera Naam Joker. "He was right. The Kapoor family is highly respected to this day. They wouldn't want women of the house wearing loose clothes and jumping in the air. There was a rule, and they were right," she added.
