Hollywood loves familiarity, predictability, formulas that they know work and make them money. We’re in an era of IP mining unparalleled in cinema history, where brand recognition is at the center of most film development. From theMarvel Cinematic Universe to Star Wars toJohn Wick, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and loosely defined origin stories are constant in the current release landscape. But it seems Hollywood has forgotten its secret weapon – public domain – and that characters and concepts can be re-invented and plopped into any ol’ place, rather than spread too thin. And there's no better proof of this than the success of Shakespeare-turned-teen-movies in the '90s and 2000s.
