Back when Archive 81emerged on Netflix's catalog in 2022, it was hardly an anomaly among its peers. In between teenage romps such as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and deep emotional analyses like Midnight Mass, the streamer seemed to be propping itself up as a home for elaborate horror productions, kind of like Apple TV+ with sci-fi. Even some of its science fiction originals, namely Darkand Stranger Things, had sort of a horror edge to them. So, for the platform to release an H.P. Lovecraft-inspired analog horror was nothing far from what was already expected.
