Horror has proven itself time and time again to be one of the most versatile yet controversial genres of filmmaking, with its usage of shocking content and disturbing imagery often making it a target of persecution. While individual subgenres of horror get more focus and vitriol than others, the singular subgenre of horror that stands out the most in terms of its graphic content and inherent controvery is that of the torture film. The subgenre largely entails a central character being the target of overwhelming torture and pain from an evildoer, often defined by their gory content and cringe-inducing methods of torture.
