The human survivors from The Walking Dead would be happy to stay in their dystopian reality if they saw how bad the darkest zombie apocalypse in fiction really is. In The Walking Dead's post-apocalyptic society, survivors don't need to get bitten or scratched to join the ranks of the undead, as the latent Wildfire virus activates automatically inside the brainstem the exact moment a person perishes from any cause. This permanent curse strips away the classic survival goal of avoiding bites and forces the characters to fight endlessly to avoid birthing new monsters. Meanwhile, the lumbering "walkers" are a constant ticking clock that exposes the volatility of human civilization.
