The Undertaker, one of WWE’s most iconic figures, dominated the ring for over three decades. He officially retired in 2020 at WrestleMania 36 after facing AJ Styles in a cinematic Boneyard Match that earned widespread praise from fans.

In 2017, he initially planned to retire after losing to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33. He left his signature jacket, cap, and gloves in the ring, signaling the end of his career. However, he shocked fans by returning at WrestleMania 34 and decisively defeating John Cena in a squash match.

Despite competing in several matches after that emotional moment at WrestleMania 33, he finally retired in 2020. Nearly five years later, The Deadman still reportedly struggles to adjust to life after wrestling.

The Undertaker reflects on the hardest part of retiring from wrestling

Speaking on his podcast, Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway, The Undertaker sat down with Diamond Dallas Page to discuss the emotional and mental challenges of stepping away from in-ring competition. He reflected on the internal struggle of knowing it was the right time to retire despite still feeling the desire to continue.

He stated, “To call it quits and know that it’s the right thing to do that’s tough… I’ve been there.” He continued, “In my mind’s eye, I could still go. In my heart, I wanted to go. But, I knew. I was like, ‘I’m done. I’m out of gas.’ It took me a while to really come to grips with it, even though I knew I was doing the right thing. It was still like, there was that huge void like, ‘What do I do now? I don’t know that I want to coach. I don’t know that I want to do this.’ It’s just like, this is all that I knew for the past 30-plus years.” [H/T: WrestlingInc]

WWE legend The Undertaker cemented his legacy as one of the greatest in the industry. He recently appeared on WWE TV during the RAW Netflix premiere episode, sharing a moment with Rhea Ripley after her Women’s World Championship victory.

He also plays a key role in WWE’s A&E series WWE LFG: Legends & Future Greats, coaching rising stars alongside Bully Ray, Booker T, and Mickie James.
