Anybody who has seen the films of Denis Villeneuve knows that the man's knowledge of film history runs deep. The way he's moved through genres and evolved his approach to storytellingshows that he's far more than the cold Stanley Kubrick wannabe that many naysayers accuse him of being. In comparison to the likes of fellow modern masters Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan, he doesn't spend as much time shouting out his specific influences when a new film comes out. But, when he does mention his eclectic influences, you can rest assured you'll be surprised by what he mentions.
