The Strangers: Chapter 2, the second entry in The Strangers film series, has received poor reviews, leading to a low score on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. The first movie, The Strangers: Chapter 1, came out in 2024 and was also panned by critics. However, it went on to become a box-office success.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 reviews are no better than Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 2 has not fared much better with critics than the first movie. In a scathing review, Jamie Graham of Empire Magazine noted, “At once explaining too much and not enough, this middle segment of the trilogy fails to amp up the stranger danger.” Graham went on to speculate that the scariest thing in the movie might be “the end title: To be continued…”

According to Slant Magazine’s Mark Hanson, the slasher sequel might be “[most] notable for its distracting resemblance to Rick Rosenthal’s Halloween II.”

Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting observed that even though the post-credits scene of the second part “weakly” sets up the third and final chapter of the series, the recent movie “throttles and chokes out any lingering interest in the Strangers and this confounding trilogy.”

RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico called The Strangers: Chapter 2 “a leaden bore.” Tallerico added that the movie “alternates between making no sense at all and insulting the intelligence of the poor souls who see it.”

However, not all reviews are negative. Alistair Ryder of Looper accepted that The Strangers: Chapter 2 doesn’t have anything new to offer to the slasher genre but pointed out its “pivot to survival thriller mode” and mentioned that it felt “like a breath of fresh air after a tiresome prior instalment with no unique ideas.”

The Strangers: Chapter 2 Rotten Tomatoes score follows the path of Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 2 currently has a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 12 reviews, marginally better than the 21% rating that the first movie received. As the sequel nears its September 26 U.S. release date, this number will likely change as more reviews come in. If the current trend continues, it’s safe to assume that the filmmakers would hope for yet another major audience response at the box office.
