Ryan Gosling's sudden pivot to big-budget movies isn't all that sudden. It's just that before this year's Project Hail Mary, Gosling had a difficult time pulling audiences to theaters for his tentpoles. Aside from La La Land, which grossed more than $500 million worldwide, Gosling's mainstream movies in the 2010s struggled at the box office. The Nice Guys infamously underperformed despite excellent reviews in 2016. The star-studded Gangster Squad had a similarly disappointing run three years earlier. In 2018, Gosling's unconventional Neil Armstrong biopic First Man barely crossed the $100 million milestone worldwide. The star's most expensive movie of this run cost $185 million to produce and seemingly had a beloved franchise to rely on, but it ended up becoming one of the biggest box-office misfires of the year.
