Despite a few alterations, DeVito’s film is largely faithful to the source material, which centers on the torture and humiliation that Jonathan (Michael Douglas) and Barbara Rose (Kathleen Turner) subject each other to after deciding to call it quits on their marriage. Jay Roach’s new take, The Roses, draws inspiration from both the original novel and film, whilst adding a substantial amount of new material. The new film stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the British couple Theo and Ivy, respectively, who begin to experience disruptions in their relationship after moving to America.
