The Rings of Power Couldn’t Film a Season 3 Scene Without Inventing New Camera Tech

The much-awaited Season 3 of The Rings of Power is promising to be the most ambitious installment in the LOTR spin-off yet, with the crew going as far as to conceive a new camera technology. In a recent interview, co-showrunner Patrick McKay revealed that the Rings of Power team had to reinvent conventional filming methods in order to shoot a particular high-octane action sequence in the upcoming season.

While speaking with CBR‘s Grae Drake at the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con, McKay hyped up the action scenes, especially those involving Elves, in The Rings of Power Season 3.

The majority of the discussion focused on Ismael Cruz Córdova’s Elven archer, Arondir, with the Puerto Rican actor noting that his character will be involved in a slew of intense battle scenes in the new season.

McKay chimed in between to reveal that The Rings of Power team came up with a new camera setup to film a particular scene with Arondir.

“For one scene, we had to invent a special camera system to be right with him as he’s firing off arrows, smoking Orcs,” the writer and producer noted. “It was awesome.” Despite the revelation, McKay shied away from giving away specifics about the new camera technology his team had developed.

Córdova’s Arondir had previously spent considerable time pursuing his own goals in The Rings of Power. However, the Elven warrior is now at the forefront of the main story and will be fighting alongside Galadriel and Elrond as a general for the Elves.

The third season will pick up five years after the events of the second installment, with McKay explaining the importance of the time jump in a previous interview.

The Rings of Power Season 3 is on track to premiere on Prime Video on November 11, 2026.
