Over the past decade or so, Hollywood has gotten into a nasty habit of adapting seminal Japanese anime into soulless live-action remakes. Between the whitewashed Ghost in the Shell remake with Scarlett Johansson and the rush-job Death Note remake that tried to squeeze the entire story into a single feature film, these live-action anime remakes are usually an unmitigated disaster, but they’re not all bad. The Wachowskis’ Speed Racer movie deftly brought the dazzling anime to life, Netflix’s One Piece series is pretty perfectly cast, and Pokémon Detective Pikachu was a ton of fun.
