The Penguin Season 2 Gets Disappointing Update Amid Emmy Awards Push

The Penguin Season 2 is looking even less likely than ever before following a recent Emmy Award announcement.

Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin premiered on HBO in September 2024. A spin-off of 2022’s The Batman, the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television show sees Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot.

Since the season finale aired, there’s been much chatter online about whether or not a second season will happen. Executive producer Matt Reeves and Farrell have both said they would potentially be interested in doing more; however, there has been no official announcement about The Penguin Season 2 being greenlit at this time.

Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey also recently told Deadline that, while The Penguin Season 2 is “definitely a possibility,” there is “nothing in the works at the moment.”

What is the latest update on The Penguin Season 2?

Per Deadline, HBO is submitting The Penguin for limited series awards at the Emmys rather than Outstanding Drama Series. Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, and Deirdre O’Connell are all being submitted for acting awards, while LeFranc is vying for Outstanding Limited Series and writing.

It will also compete for directing, casting, cinematography, editing, and more awards.

While this doesn’t definitely mean The Penguin Season 2 won’t happen, it’s not a good sign, as HBO would likely put it in the drama series categories instead of limited series if there were concrete plans to make more of the show. Having said that, shows that were nominated/won in the limited series categories have gone on to have additional seasons in the past. Big Little Lies, for example, won the Outstanding Limited Series Emmy Award and then went on to have a second season.

Even if The Penguin Season 2 doesn’t happen, DC fans will get to see Farrell’s character again in The Batman Part 2, which currently has an October 2027 release date.
