The Odyssey Takes Down Yet Another Disney King With New Milestone

Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic, The Odyssey, keeps climbing the all-time charts. The film has now crossed $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office, pushing past another animated heavyweight from Disney’s stable and further making its place among the biggest theatrical releases of the year.

The Odyssey has grossed $1.72 billion worldwide since its release on July 17, 2026. Domestic ticket sales account for $609.8 million of that total, or 35.4% of the haul, while international audiences have contributed $1.11 billion, making up 64.6% of the film’s collection (via Box Office Mojo).

That figure puts The Odyssey ahead of Inside Out 2, which had stood as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time with a global total of roughly $1.46 billion. Because Inside Out 2 topped every other Hollywood-made animated title, it effectively held the title of “king” among American animated releases, even though it still trails China’s Ne Zha 2 on the all-time worldwide animated chart. With this latest milestone, The Odyssey has now out-grossed that Disney and Pixar sequel on the global scene, in other words another Disney-adjacent record it has left behind on its run.

The film’s box office trajectory has been steep since its July release. It topped $1 billion worldwide within three weeks, a milestone that made it Christopher Nolan’s first billion-dollar film since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 and only the second of his career. From there, it kept climbing, aided by a strong overseas rollout, including its China debut in mid-August, and sustained demand on large-format screens such as IMAX.

Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o. The film’s box office run has already made it the highest-grossing release of Damon, Hathaway and Pattinson’s careers.
