The Odyssey: Anne Hathaway’s Oscar Chances Just Got a Whole Lot Better, Here’s Why

The possibility of Anne Hathaway landing an Academy Award has received a major boost. Hathaway portrayed Penelope in Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey.

According to an exclusive report from Variety, Universal Pictures has decided to campaign for Hathaway in the supporting actress category. Following her portrayal of Telemachus’ mother and Odysseus’ wife in Nolan’s billion-dollar project, speculation that Hathaway would win an Oscar gained significant traction.

But the question was which category the star of The End of Oak Street would compete in. The latest update from Variety now settles the debate. Interestingly, the choice of category gives Hathaway a chance to enter a rare and elite list. If she wins the award, the 43-year-old would join Wiest and Shelley Winters as the third woman to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar twice. Hathaway previously won the award in 2013 for Les Misérables, in which she played Fantine.

Anne Hathaway now has to compete against Samantha Morton for Best Supporting Actress

While Universal Pictures will campaign Anne Hathaway for the Best Supporting Actress category, she will be competing against her co-star from The Odyssey for the award. Samantha Morton, who portrayed Circe, has also drawn widespread acclaim for her performance in Nolan’s epic.

Morton played the role of a witch who traps The Odyssey’s crew in her hut on a remote island by turning them into pigs by feeding them a potion. Later, they were saved by Odysseus, who discovered what had happened to his men.

Double-nomination from the same film for the category of Best Supporting Actress has occurred 37 times in the history of the Academy Awards. While The Devil Wears Prada star has secured one Oscar, Morton has yet to win an Academy Award. However, the Minority Report actress has received two Oscar nominations so far. She received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Sweet and Lowdown (1999) and for Best Actress for In America (2003).
