Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo is back with a very different show. The Lowdown is another Oklahoma crime caper, but it’s a decidedly pulpier, hard-boiled neo-noir, with a much darker sense of humor. Ethan Hawke stars as Lee Raybon, an eccentric journalist who roams around Tulsa in a beaten-up old van in search of the truth — even when it gets him pummeled, home-invaded, or kidnapped — and lives in a dingy apartment above a used bookstore. The character is loosely based on real-life reporter Lee Roy Chapman, who reshaped public understanding of Tulsa’s complicated racial history, and he’s one of the best new TV characters of the year.
