HBO’s The Last of Us has used the freedoms allowed by its new medium to expand the worldbuilding and deepen the characters from their source material. Video games are stuck in one character’s perspective (at least, one at a time), but TV has the ability to cut between an unlimited number of character perspectives, and The Last of Us’ TV adaptation has taken advantage of that. The series has introduced us to characters who were only mentioned in the games, like Jackson’s resident stoner Eugene, and even introduced some original characters who were never a part of the games, like Kansas City revolutionary Kathleen.
