“He’s someone who is very polarizing and has too much power and intensity. I would be scared to fight him in this division, too. No one wants to fight him, and I don’t blame them.” That’s what legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson had to say, explaining why he gave David Benavidez the popular nickname ‘The Mexican Monster.’ However, the same persona seems to be under public scrutiny following a scathing remark from Canelo Alvarez

If you haven’t been keeping up with the drama, Benavidez has been vying for a fight against ‘Cinnamon’ for years at this point, with zero success. Things got so bad that the 28-year-old had to move up to the light heavyweight division to find success. Regardless, Canelo recently had a lot to say about why he hasn’t given Benavidez the same opportunity he was given by Floyd Mayweather when he was coming up in the sport.

Canelo Alvarez brands David Benavidez disrespectful

Speaking to Fight Hype in an interview on 28th March, Canelo Alvarez claimed Benavidez has achieved nothing in his career to warrant a shot at glory while branding the boxer disrespectful. “The way he talks, he thinks he’s Superman. He’s very disrespectful, not just with me but with everybody, and he’s accomplished nothing. [And] he’s not even a champion. He’s not even in my weight class [168 anymore],” Canelo said.

Since the statement, Benavidez has vied for a fight against former undisputed light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, with backing from the WBC, who named him mandatory of Bivol. However, Bivol instead chose to vacate the WBC belt to fight Artur Beterbiev in a rematch, leaving Benavidez to look for action elsewhere. While some sources say there are ongoing talks about Benavidez fighting Interim WBO champion Callum Smith, nothing has been confirmed.

Amid all this, Fight Hub TV released a video shared by Benavidez himself, where the 28-year-old can be seen working the heavy bag. “David Benavidez is looking SCARY on the heavy bag,” they captioned the post. However, fans didn’t quite agree with it, as they started questioning his ‘Monster’ persona.

Benavidez gets called an ‘E-Mail Champion’

While Benavidez showed off his moves on the bag, fans were busy giving him a reality check. One user bluntly presented their opinion about the clip. “No, he’s not,” the user wrote directly responding to the caption. It’s worth noting that even though Benavidez looked quite agile, transferring that speed in the ring against Canelo will be different.

Another user chimed in, taking digs at Benavidez for his recent promotion to WBC full champion. “Best email champion on the internet,” the user wrote. Interestingly, after Bivol relinquished his title, Benavidez must have received an email informing him about the promotion, i.e., E-Mail Champion.

Someone else poked fun at Benavidez’s physique. “Benavidez built like that heavy bag lol,” the user commented, sharing a picture of him from before the David Morrell fight. This picture was from a photo shoot for the fight. In the fight, Benavidez appeared in a better shape, and more importantly, won.

Even the next user wasn’t convinced the clip made Beanavidez look scary. “That’s scary to you? 🤣,” the user questioned. He might not have looked scary, but he did look in form and ready for action.

The next user took the ultimate dig, as he questioned Benavidez’s ‘Monster’ persona. “David ‘the fake monster’ Benavidez,” the user wrote. The insult might be subtle, but the implication is huge.

That said, David Benavidez’s effort to show off his skills seems to have fallen flat on its face. Whether he ever gets the opportunity to prove he is better than Canelo Alvarez seems more unlikely with each passing day. But the question is, what did you think about the clip?
