Last year it was announced that Warner Bros. would be developing a new live-action adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter story, and this time it will be developed as a TV series. We’ve now learned that this high-profile series will debut on Max in 2026.

This news was shared by David Zaslav on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. He said:

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter. The last film was made more than a dozen years ago.”

Zaslav also revealed that he also recently met with met just a few weeks ago with Rowling in London to talk about the project, saying:

“I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys] and Channing [WBD TV chief Channing Dungey] and we spent some real time with J.K. and her team. Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max.”

The series will be casting young actors in the role of the main characters and the series will be released over the course of the next ten years. This is big project and Rowling previously said in a statement: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content said in a statement: “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

I’m very curious to see how they handle the Harry Potter series with this new project. It’s going to be a massive undertaking.
