In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 7, armed men under High Commander Wharton’s orders stormed Jezebel, massacring all the women there, except Janine. Prior to the massacre, Janine begged the men to leave them be. Unfortunately, her pleas fell on deaf ears.

Janine was spared on Commander Bell’s orders as he had developed a perverted attraction towards her. He made her his new handmaid.

As such, Janine was now trapped in a miserable situation. Prior to this, whenever Bell showed up at Jezebel, he took Janine as a personal sex slave. However, she had multiple opportunities to escape him, like Commander Lawrence showing up on rare occasions or when Bell dealt with other matters.

When Aunt Lydia learned of Janine becoming Bell’s handmaid, she was initially relieved and visited Bell to thank him. However, she soon became anxious and concerned when she saw a bruised and swollen Janine standing next to a window. Unfortunately, Lydia could not intervene as Janine had become Bell’s handmaid — which meant that no one could interfere in his family life.

Janine’s hopes of being rescued, sparked by Lawrence showing her a picture drawn by her daughter and June informing her of Mayday’s coup, had been dashed.

It remains to be seen whether Janine will sink into further despair or her hopes of escaping her miserable existence in Gilead will be rekindled.
