Later this year, in December, director Denis Villeneuve will conclude what will likely go down as one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies in decades with Dune: Part Three. Based on the seminal novels by Frank Herbert, the trilogy is headlined by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, with a star-studded supporting cast. The first two installments — Dune and Dune: Part Two — have grossed a combined total of more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, even though the first part’s theatrical performance was undercut by a day-and-date streaming release. The two movies have received a total of 15 Oscar nominations, with Dune winning in six categories. This doesn’t typically happen with genre films, and the last time that the industry witnessed something like this was over two decades ago, with arguably the greatest fantasy trilogy ever made.
