Based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, The Girlfriend follows Laura (Robin Wright), the possessive mother of 27-year-old Daniel (Laurie Davidson), who immediately clashes with his mysterious new girlfriend, Cherry Laine (Olivia Cooke). Full of deception, manipulation, and half-truths, the story is told through both Laura and Cherry’s points of view, alternating between their perspectives to establish a sense of uncertainty as their dynamic evolves. Though Cherry appears to genuinely love Daniel, as the season progresses, it becomes clear that there may be some ulterior motives at play, which Laura does her best to expose to break them up. The rivalry between Laura and Cherry escalates all the way up to the season finale, whichends with a cliffhanger that leaves Cherry and Daniel’s future up in the air.
