Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have released the first glimpse of Mike Flanagan’s upcoming entry into the Exorcist franchise, titled The Exorcist: Martyrs. The 15-second teaser and a series of first-look images, released on October 7, 2026, confirm a sharp stylistic departure for the series, leaning into a gritty, serial killer procedural aesthetic rather than the traditional domestic possession tropes.
The film anonymous silhouettes as a detective investigating a series of supernatural murders.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Detective Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide investigator who finds herself at the center of a supernatural crisis.
A Standalone Creative Reboot
While serving as the seventh film in the franchise’s history, Flanagan is treating the project as a creative reboot. The narrative effectively bypasses the events of the 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer, operating instead as a standalone story. Flanagan serves as writer, director, and producer.
In a recent interview with FilmSpeak, Flanagan described the production as “viciously dark” and even “unsafely dark,” suggesting a level of emotional and psychological intensity that exceeds his previous work on Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House. The film’s structure has been compared to Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, moving the horror “out of the bedroom” and into a broader citywide investigation.
The central antagonist is a serial killer known as “Father Sunday,” played by John Leguizamo. The plot follows Miller as she tracks Sunday, whose crimes reportedly continue through supernatural means even after his execution. The supporting cast features Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne as priests involved in the case, while Jacobi Jupe plays Detective Miller’s son.

The ‘Flanagan Month’ Context
The reveal of The Exorcist: Martyrs arrives during a prolific window for the filmmaker. On the same day the teaser debuted, Flanagan’s new Carrie series premiered on Prime Video. Additionally, the DC film Clayface, which Flanagan scripted, is slated for a theatrical release on October 23, 2026. This cluster of releases marks a significant period of visibility for the director as he takes the reins of one of horror’s most storied properties.
The Exorcist: Martyrs is currently scheduled for a North American theatrical release on March 12, 2027. The mid-March date serves as the primary global rollout for the film.
