When it comes to long-running television, nothing derails a beloved show's legacy quite like a bad series finale. From the jarring ending of Seinfeld to one of the most controversial wrap-ups in history with Game of Thrones, endings that try too hard to subvert expectations are truly enough to tarnish an entire show for many fandoms. There is, perhaps, no better example of this than Merlin. Though it is now somewhat of a forgotten gem, the BBC series debuted with a fascinating premise back in the fall of 2008. By the time it made its way to America the following summer, the series had developed a mighty fanbase and enjoyed an enticing five-season run, thanks to the brilliant way it reinvented Arthurian legend.
