The 2025 Brit Awards paid a heartfelt tribute to Liam Payne during Saturday’s ceremony. The beloved singer-songwriter tragically passed away in October 2024 when he was just 31 years old.
In a poignant moment near the ceremony’s conclusion, host Jack Whitehall addressed the audience, saying it was time to “take a moment to remember a very special person who meant so much to so many of the people in this room and to millions of you around the world.”
“Last October, we woke to the devastating news that Liam Payne had tragically passed away,” Whitehall continued. “He achieved so much in the short time that he was on this Earth, and was not only a supremely gifted musician, but an incredibly kind soul who touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. We have so many amazing memories of Liam here at the Brits. So tonight we celebrate his legacy, look back, and remember the remarkable Liam Payne.”
The tribute featured a touching video montage showcasing memorable moments from Payne’s life—from touring with One Direction to cherished family moments and his memorable encounter with the Queen. The montage was set to the emotional backdrop of One Direction’s hit ballad “Little Things.”
After the broadcast of the moving tribute, fellow One Direction member Louis Tomlinson expressed his gratitude to the Brit Awards through a heartfelt post on X. “Beautiful tribute,” he wrote. “Miss you always brother x.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Payne—alongside his One Direction bandmates—secured seven prestigious Brit Awards, with four specifically for British Video of the Year. His solo endeavors also earned recognition, with nominations for collaborations including “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo and “For You” with Rita Ora.
Just weeks before the Brits, the Grammy Awards also commemorated Payne during their In Memoriam segment, featuring a meticulously produced video tribute accompanied by Coldplay’s Chris Martin performing “All My Love.”
Payne’s life came to a tragic end on Oct. 16, 2024, following a fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
Post-Brit Awards, Payne’s family released a statement to the BBC addressing his death, the subsequent police investigation, and the Brit tribute:
“Liam’s death was an unspeakable tragedy. This is a time of tremendous grief and pain for those who knew and loved him. Liam ought to have had a long life ahead of him. Instead, Bear has lost his father, Geoff and Karen have lost their son, Ruth and Nicola have lost their brother, and all of Liam’s friends and fans have lost someone they held very dear.
We understand that the investigation into Liam’s death was absolutely necessary, and the family recognizes the work done by the Argentinian authorities. However, the family accepts the Court of Appeal’s decision to drop all charges.”
The relentless media scrutiny and speculation surrounding the investigation has inflicted immeasurable, permanent trauma on the family, particularly affecting Liam’s young son Bear, who is grappling with emotions that no child his age should ever have to face.
The family continues to request privacy during this period of profound mourning and asks for respect as they navigate through their grief.
This weekend’s Brit Awards celebrated Liam’s extraordinary impact on British music and his remarkable influence on countless fans worldwide. The industry joined together to honor his legacy, and we will forever cherish the happiness his artistry brought to millions.
Liam, your light continues to shine bright, and you remain deeply loved and profoundly missed.”
